Patient & Public Involvement (PPI) Evening
15th January 2020
In January 2020 we held a second collaborative PPI event in partnership with the IBIS-II breast cancer trial team. The joint effort was for pragmatic reasons, and because we felt that attendees might benefit from queries asked by others, which in turn could act as the catalyst for some interesting, informative & helpful conversations. The event was attended by members of both the PROVENT & IBIS-II study teams, PROVENT feasibility and IBIS-II study participants, local research staff members, men on active surveillance (AS) programs from around the UK, partners/carers & patient representatives.
The evening began with welcomes and introductions followed by two brief presentations on the research carried out here at the Centre for Cancer Prevention. The first was given by Dr Prabhakar Rajan who discussed the treatment strategies for low risk prostate cancer, whilst the second was a joint presentation by Dr. Ivana Sestak & Jessica Adams. Dr. Sestak précised the breast cancer prevention research to date, and Jessica discussed the follow-up data on the IBIS-II study, The talks were followed by a question and answer session.
After some light refreshments and the opportunity for informal chat, smaller groups were formed to garner thoughts on study procedures, specifically the value of collecting of long- term follow-up data, data confidentiality & security. Overall, participants had a positive response to the use of personal identifiable data to collect long-term follow-up health data for analyses. The advantages of long-term follow-up of preventive interventions cited included the capacity to examine program effects across multiple later life outcomes, the ability to examine the aetiological processes involved in the development of the outcomes of interest, and the ability to provide more concrete estimates of the relative benefits and costs of an intervention. Finally the evening ended with the group reconvening as one to feedback on the outbreak discussions.
